Deer Repellents Deer Away® There are three major classes of repellents–ones that give a bitter taste to target plants, ones that repel by smelling like old eggs, blood, or something else that deer don’t like and ones that smell like coyote urine that makes deer think there are predators around. Deer Away® repels by smelling like old eggs while Deer-Off II is a dual deterrent system containing old egg smell and a hot pepper and garlic taste that deer find very offensive. Shake-Away™ for deer and large animals is a powdered coyote urine scent that scares deer away by making them think coyotes are around. Some of these deer repellents also work against other animals. Deer Away works against rabbits; Deer-Off II is effective against deer, rabbits and squirrels; and Shake-Away™ is also useful for repelling raccoons, armadillos, and javalinas. Deer repellents shouldn't be expected to tackle major deer problems but they can do a very good job protecting small areas and specimen plants if you remembers a few basic rules: (1) Re-apply the repellent before it has a chance to wash away (most repellents stick well to plants and some last many months, so it is important to read the label in order to know when to re-spray). (2) When treating growing plants, re-spray before the new growth gets long enough to provide an enticing meal. And (3) vary your repellents every so often, because deer may get used to certain ones and come to ignore them. Deer Away® - Deer & Rabbit Repellent - OMRI Listed for Organic Gardening gives sprayed areas an old egg smell. It is safe to use around gardens, lawns, shrubs and trees. The ready-to-use formula comes in a handy spray bottle while the economical concentrate gets diluted at the rate of 4 parts water to 1 part Deer Away. One application will last up to 3 months.
Deer Away® - Big Game Repellent
Deer-Off II® - Deer, Rabbit & Squirrel Repellent - OMRI Listed for Organic Gardening - is safe for use around gardens, trees, lawns, shrubs, flowers and food crops. Do not spray edibles within 14 days of harvest. This repellent uses a dual deterrent of old egg smell and hot pepper and garlic taste. The economical concentrate gets diluted at the rate of 7 parts water to 1 part Deer-Off II. One application will last up to 3 months.
Shake-Away™ Deer and Large Animal Granules & Commercial Blend - OMRI Listed for Organic Gardening Shake-Away™ is a more refined form of urine that comes as a powder or granules. The Large Animal Granules are made with coyote urine and, in addition to protecting against deer, also protect against elk, raccoons, armadillos, javalinas and wild pigs. The Commercial Blend is a mixture of fox, bobcat and coyote urine and protects against all the above animals as well as smaller animals like squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, opossums, porcupines, woodchucks, ground hogs, prairie dogs, skunks, gophers and domestic cats. When applied to exposed outdoor areas Shake-Away™ needs to be replenished every week or two, and also needs to be replaced after a heavy rain. The powder packs last for 3 months. One 20-ounce container holds enough to create a protective strip one foot wide and 600 feet long around the perimeter of an area to be protected. One 3 lb container creates a protective strip one foot wide and 1,440 feet long. The 12 lb container creates a protective strip one foot wide and 5,760 feet long. Individual powder packs can be hung on specimen shrubs and trees or several can be strung up on a line a few feet apart to create a virtual fence.
