Deer Repellents About Deer Repellents There are two major classes of repellents–ones that give a bitter taste to target plants and ones that repel by smelling like coyote urine, old eggs, blood, or something else that deer don’t like. The bitter types on the list below are Chew-Not and Ropel®; while a good repulsive scent type is Shake-Away™ for deer and large animals. Shake-Away™ for deer and large is a powered coyote urine scent that scares deer away by making them think coyotes are around. Some of these deer repellents also work against other animals. Chew-Not works against rabbits; RopelŪ discourages raccoons, rabbits, squirrels, beavers, rats, mice, dogs, and cats; and Shake-Away™ is useful for repelling raccoons, armadillos, and javalinas. For more information about these repellants’ actions against various small critters go back to our home page by clicking on the “home” oval above and use the links halfway down the home page to visit an appropriate small animal site. In general, deer repellents cannot be expected to tackle major deer problems as well as electric deer fence; and they are at a disadvantage in vegetable gardens, where a small pet-safe electric fence will keep out deer plus virtually all small critters (see Mr. McGregors Fence Kit). Even so, convenient deer repellents can do a good job if one remembers a few basic rules: (1) Re-apply the repellent before it has a chance to wash away (most repellents stick well to plants and some last many months, so it is important to read the label in order to know when to re-spray). (2) When treating growing plants, re-spray before the new growth gets long enough to provide an enticing meal. And (3) vary your repellents every so often, because deer may get used to certain ones and come to ignore them.
Listed Deer Repellent Features: Chew-Not: Imparts bitter taste to plants. A thick liquid that can be diluted for spray applications. Will not wash off. Lasts 6 months. Paint or spray on fruit trees and favored plants. Available in a wide range of sizes. Also works on rabbits. Ro-pel®: Imparts bitter taste to plants and other items. Penetrates into the bark of trees and many other places. Ecologically safe, non-hazardous, no offensive smell. Besides repelling deer it also works on raccoons, rabbits, squirrels, beavers, dogs, cats, rats, mice, and birds. Shake-Away™ (powdered coyote urine) comes in two forms–“Shake-Away™ Deer and Large Animal Powder” (in 20-ounce and 12-pound sizes) and “Shake-Away™ Packs for Deer.” The former is powder that can be applied around vegetable garden borders, around flower gardens or lightly on flowering plants (it won’t harm them), or around or on shrubs and trees. the 20-ounce and 12-pound sizes provide enough material to lay down foot-wide protective strips roughly 600 and 5,000 feet long, respectively. Alternatively, the powder can be made into 2-ounce portions packed in cut-off sections of nylon stockings that are tied off and hung on vulnerable plants; or the pre-made Shake-Away™ Packs for Deer (four packs per container) can be hung up every 10 to 20 feet around the perimeter of the area being protected. The packs last around 90 days, the stocking balls last roughly 30 days, and the powder applied directly needs to be replaced every week or two and after any heavy rain. |
