Basic water sprayers
Basic Motion-Activated Water Sprayers The sprayer on the left, known as the “Scarecrow” is good at driving interlopers away from small areas where you don’t want them. It is especially effective against deer, rabbits, raccoons, dogs, and cats. The Scarecrow, which works both day and night, is equipped with a heat sensor and puts out a brief burst of water whenever it detects motion within range. This device requires a clear field of view (bushes and trees block it), a dedicated hose line, and a 9-volt battery (to power the motion detector). It covers up to 1,000 square feet and detects motion in a 100-degree arc extending outward 35 feet from the detector.
A less flamboyant water sprayer by Havahart lacks the crow’s face. It’s motion-detecting ability and spray coverage are roughly equivalent to the Scarecrow’s. Critter Sentry™ Motion-Activated Lights and Water Sprayer This is the Cadillac of motion-activated animal repellers. Effective against raccoons, deer, rabbits, dogs, cats, skunks, geese, ducks, and other creatures, its infrared motion sensor can detect movement over 100 feet away and over an arc of 240 degrees. This range can be adjusted downward and also narrowed to suit any situation. When movement is detected, the 30-inch tall Critter Sentry™ responds with a hard-hitting burst of water sprayed from an adjustable impact-type nozzle. (Three nozzles designed to spray distances ranging from 30 to 60 feet come with the product). The Critter Sentry™ will also respond by lighting the target area out to a distance of 50 feet with high-intensity tungsten halogen lights that can be turned in any direction. A couple of minutes after the last motion is detected, the Critter Sentry™ will turn off automatically and wait for the next intruder. There are two models. The model 120 can be set up on any flat surface by means of four legs (shown in the picture) that extend out sideways on paved areas or else by means of two spikes that stick into the ground. (Both legs and spikes are included.) The other model, the 220, has internal water and electrical connections and is designed to be built into decks and docks. Both models have an excellent record for repelling a wide range of creatures; both feature heavy-duty industrial components built to last; and both come with a 1-year limited manufacturer’s warranty. |
